How do I choose the right urn for my loved one?

When selecting an Urn or Casket, consider the following factors:

  • Material: Consider a colour and material that perhaps reflects your loved one’s personality, such as wood, metal, ceramic, or biodegradable options for an eco-friendly option.
  • Size: Ensure the urn has enough capacity for the ashes.
  • Purpose: Consider whether the urn will be kept at home or interred. Some urns are specifically designed for scattering, while others are intended for long-term display or burial.
  • Personalisation: We can personalise your Casket or Urn. Engravings, artwork, or other customisations can help make the urn unique and meaningful.

What size Urn or casket do I need for the ashes?

In order to calculate the size you require, for every pound of body weight, allow one cubic inch of cremated remains. If you are measuring in Kilograms, the conversion is 1 Kilogram = 2.2 Pounds.

Pre-Death Weight
Pounds / Stone / KG
Urn Size Required
Cubic Inches / Cl
Weight of Ashes
Grams / KG
1lb / 0.072 stone / 0.45kg 1 cubic inch / 1.7cl 13g
62lb / 4.5 stone / 28.5KG 62 cubic inches / 100cl 850g
168lb / 12 stone / 76.2KG 168 cubic inches / 280cl 2.17kg

Your consideration should be to ensure the capacity is large enough to hold the ashes. Our 3.4 litre (340cl) capacity Caskets and Urns are suitable for up to 14 stone, 200 Lb or 90 kilos.

Can I bury an urn or casket?

Yes, both urns and cremation caskets can be buried, but there are some considerations:

  • Caskets: If you’re burying a cremation casket, it is typically placed in a burial vault or grave liner to ensure the casket does not collapse over time.
  • Urns: Some urns are designed for burial, but you’ll need to check if the material is durable enough for underground burial. Additionally, some cemeteries require a protective outer container (like a vault) for burial.
  • Eco-friendly Options: If you are considering a green or natural burial, biodegradable urns are available for families who wish to minimise environmental impact.

Can I scatter ashes from the urn?

Yes, we offer urns designed specifically for scattering ashes. These urns have a wide opening or a special lid mechanism that makes it easier to scatter ashes in a meaningful location, such as a favourite park, beach, or family gathering place. Some biodegradable urns are also designed to be scattered in water or soil.

Do you offer eco-friendly or biodegradable urns?

Yes, we offer a selection of biodegradable urns made from materials like salt, bamboo, paper, and recycled materials. These urns are ideal for families who want to honour their loved ones with a burial that minimises environmental impact. They are designed to break down naturally over time, making them suitable for burial in the earth or water.  Please see the Eco Urns menu option to view our full Eco range.

How long does it take to receive an urn or casket?

  • Standard Shipping: Most of our urns and caskets are available for immediate dispatch and typically will arrive within 7-10 business days.
  • Customisation: If you choose to personalise the urn or casket with an engraving, it may take longer, usually 1-2 weeks depending on the complexity of the customisation.
  • Expedited Shipping: We offer expedited shipping options if you need the urn or casket sooner. Please contact us on 07732 338517 for more details.

How do I care for my urn or casket?

Proper care depends on the material of the urn or casket:

  • Wood: Regular dusting and occasionally polishing with a soft cloth and wood cleaner.
  • Metal: Wipe with a soft cloth to prevent tarnishing. Use a metal cleaner for extra shine.
  • Ceramic: Clean gently with a damp cloth to avoid damaging delicate finishes.
  • Biodegradable: These urns are intended for one-time use and do not require maintenance, but they should not be exposed to extreme conditions before use (e.g., moisture or direct sunlight).

Can I return an urn or casket?

We want to ensure that you’re completely satisfied with your purchase. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, we offer a 30-day return policy on most urns and caskets. If you do change your mind upon receipt, you will need to return the goods to us at your own cost.

Once the returned item is received by us we will refund you in full via bank transfer or direct to your original payment method.

However, customised products (engraved, personalised, or custom-designed) may not be eligible for return unless we have caused a defect or error in the customisation process. Please contact us for more information about returns or exchanges.

Can I keep a portion of the ashes in a keepsake urn?

Yes, we offer keepsake urns, which are smaller urns designed to hold a portion of the ashes. These are ideal for families who want to divide the ashes among several family members or keep a small portion in a personal memorial. You can also use them to store a token, like a lock of hair, in addition to the ashes.

What is the best urn or casket for burial at sea or scattering ashes?

For burial at sea or scattering ashes, we recommend biodegradable urns designed to break down naturally in water or earth. These urns are made from materials like salt, bamboo, or paper, which allow them to dissolve in water, making them perfect for this type of memorial.

Size and Capacity

  • Sizing Considerations: Generally, one cubic inch of urn space is required per pound of the deceased’s body weight. Make sure to choose an urn or casket that can comfortably hold all the ashes.
  • Keepsake Urns: Smaller urns (keepsakes) are available for sharing ashes among family members or for holding a portion of the remains while keeping the majority elsewhere.
  • Double Urns: Larger urns are available for families wishing to share a loved one’s remains or store the ashes of multiple people (e.g., a couple’s shared urn).

How do I safely move the ashes into the urn?

The crematorium or funeral director will present the ashes to you in a container and within a sealed bag. You can then place them in the cotton pull string bag provided for placement inside the casket.

Or, if it’s not something you feel comfortable with, you could ask the funeral director for their assistance.

Where should I put the urn?

The placement of urns, once they contain ashes, is a very personal choice. While some families choose to keep their loved at home, others opt to scatter their ashes in a fitting location. Others select a final resting place for their loved one, and bury the urn. When families choose to scatter ashes, they often then keep the urn in their home, or their garden, as a memorial to their loved one.

Within a home, urns can be  placed in a prominent position within a family room, such as on a mantelpiece, or a coffee table. Other families choose to use an urn as a decorative ornament, or place it alongside much-loved books or photo albums.

You may choose to keep the urn in one location, and then to move it later on. Some families keep their loved one’s ashes at home for the first year or two, until they feel ready to scatter them, for example. Whichever path you choose, it’s important to do what feels right. You know best what feels natural to you, and what your loved one would have wanted.

Could I put personal items in the urn, with my loved one’s ashes?

Yes, you could. In fact, urns are often used to store things other than cremated remains. Some of our clients tell us they have scattered the ashes and, now, keep other personal items in the urn. This could be a memento from the person, such as a lock of hair, or a photograph. We have other clients who have chosen, instead, to put these items in with the ashes themselves. Again, it’s a very personal choice. It’s worth considering before you select your urn size; you might choose a slightly larger urn, if you think this is something you’d like to do.

How will I open the urn?

Urns come in all shapes and sizes. Some open slightly differently, too. It depends on the specific design you choose, but your chosen urn will likely have a threaded screw-top lid. You may also find some urns that open from the base, or even from the rear. Pet cremation urns, in particular, are likely to open from the base or the rear.

Should I seal the urn?

It’s unlikely you’ll need to seal the lid. Although designs vary, most urns will close firmly, meaning you don’t need to secure them any further. Brass urns, for example, close securely using a threaded lid. It’s absolutely your choice. If you do decide that you want to seal the urn, you can purchase an appropriate sealant from a DIY store.

Our Wooden Caskets are unscrewed from the bottom via 6 screws which will release the base. We recommend rescrewing the base once the ashes have been placed inside, to keep them safe and secure.

What is a keepsake urn?

A keepsake urn is used when a small amount of ashes is to be kept together. Keepsake urns are very small and only store a token volume of ashes. These urns are most commonly used by families who each want to keep some of the ashes. Alternatively, a token amount can be kept if a family decides to scatter the ashes in a meaningful place. For some people, they feel that by keeping a small amount with them, they will always have their loved one nearby.

Can I use a normal urn, rather than a pet urn, for my pet’s ashes?

Absolutely. Choosing an urn is a very personal process, and if you’ve seen a design you like, it makes little difference whether it’s listed as a pet urn, or a human urn. Both types of urn serve the same purpose. Pet urns might have a slightly smaller capacity, in some cases, so it’s worth double-checking the size. What’s important is that you find an urn that you feel is a fitting tribute to your loved one.

How will the urn be shipped?

Upon receipt of your order we will commence customisation if required and then your urn will be carefully packaged – securely using a sturdy outer carton and sent to you as soon as possible. We use Evri parcel delivery service and will provide updated tracking information.
