A Step by Step Guide to Filling a Scatter Tube with Ashes

Scatter tubes have become a popular choice for families who wish to say goodbye in a personal and meaningful way.  Whether you are planning to scatter a loved one’s ashes at a special location or simply want a dignified way to hold them until the ceremony, knowing how to transfer the ashes from the container provided by the funeral director into a scatter tube can help you feel prepared.

At Infinity Urns we know this is a delicate task.  This guide offer simple, respectful instructions to help you fill a scatter tube with ashes safely and thoughtfully.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin gather the following:

  • The scatter tube of your choise.  See our wide range of scatter tubes at https://infinityurns.co.uk/product-category/scatter-tubes/
  • The temporary container or vessel provided by the funeral director (usually a plastic or cardboard box)
  • A clean flat surface and some newspaper or a tray to catch any spills
  • A funnel or scoop (optional but makes the process easier)
  • A prefer to disposable gloves if you prefer.

Step by Step Instructions

Prepare your space – choose a quiet, private area with enough room to work comfortably.

  1.  Lay down newspaper or a tray on a flat undisturbed surface.
  2. Remove the lid from the scatter tube by twisting gently to release

3.  Remove the inner white tube by twisting gently and place on the flat surface with the open end facing upwards.

4. Slowly fill the white tube with the ashes (using a funnel if required).

5.   Squeeze a generous line of glue approximately one inch below the rim around the inside circumference of the outer tube (the tube with the printed image and a hole in the base).

6. Line uo the openings of both tubes and push the outer tube downwards slowly, to allow air to escape through the vent hole.  Rotate as pushing.

7. Once the tubes are firmly in place, attach the label provided over the vent hole.

PLEASE NOTE: it is important to attach the label at this point in the assembly to prevent any leakage of ashes through the vent hole when the tube is returned to its upright position.

8.  Turn the sealed scatter tube over and replace the lid ensuring that the image is aligned

9.  To scatter the ashes, remove the lid and push out the perforated disc.

Additional Tips

Consider help – if you feel uneasy doing this alone, ask a trusted family member or friend to assist.

Check the capacity – scatter tubes come in two sizes.  Ensure your tube is large enough to hold the full amount of ashes.  Some families choose multiple scatter tubes if sharing the ashes amongst relatives.

Practice with care – Before the ceremony, familiarise yourself with how the scatter tube opens for scattering, ours feature a simple push-in perforated disc (see above).
